The Road: Should the mom have killed herself?

     The book that I chose to read is The Road. This book is about a world post apocalypse where a father and son both try to survive and travel south because thatis where the father says that they should go. With these two main characters, there used to be a woman. She was the man's wife and the child's mother. somewhere back on the road, she couldn't take the uncertainty of life so she killed herself. The question for our group this week is "Should the mom have killed herself?"

      I don't think that it was right for the mom to have killed herself and left the other two by themselves. Her reasoning for her suicide was that she was sure that some horrible death would meet them later no matter what happened and with all of the uncrtainty going on all arund her, she wanted to make sure that she at least had control of her own death. Even though I can completely understand why she wanted to die, I thought that this was incredibly selfish of her and that she shouldn't have done it. If all three of them had just wanted to kill themselves, then it would be acceptable but for her to leave both her husband and her kid by themselves with no one else to turn to for help is very inconsiderate. Now the father and son are left by themselves and it is even harder for them to survive.
